Roof Moss Removal

Q: I have used every product for roof moss and still I have some spots that will turn black but literally start growing again in a few weeks even if I pick the moss off- no moisture under the shingles.

A: If you want to remove and prevent the reoccurrence of the moss, lichens and algae there are some steps that you can take that should be beneficial.

Removing Concrete Step

Q: We have a poured patio with two steps down from the door. We need to remove the top step in order to build a deck over the whole thing. It appears it was done in a single pour-we think we will probably need to board up the slider for protection and rent a jackhammer for the day. Anything we should consider before taking on this endeavor?

A: It is highly unusual that the steps and pad were done in one pour (but anything is possible). Usually the steps sit on the pad.

A couple of points - remember your neighbors - jackhammers can be heard for hundred's of yards. Get a dumpster to get rid of the concrete - safety - glasses, gloves, steel toed boots, there will most likely be rebar or wire mesh in the concrete, heavy duty bolt cutters are best to cut wire mesh, power saw with metal blade for rebar.

Upgrading An Electrical Service

Q: We have a breaker that keeps popping-we have had it replaced once but the guy said the board was too small-barely met code, which he said is not unusual in homes. He quoted a huge amount to upgrade, what is a ballpark figure of what it should cost to replace?

A: If you are talking about upgrading your service, you will be looking at between $1,000 and $1,750 plus any utility fees (usually about $500) and the cost of a permit.
