New Wi-Fi Thermostat for DITRA-HEAT System

Control the Floor Warming System from Anywhere, at Any Time

Ditra-Heat WiFi Thermostat

Schluter®-Systems is adding smart home technology to its award winning DITRA-HEAT electric floor warming system with a new Wi-Fi thermostat.

The new DITRA-HEAT-E-WiFi thermostat makes programming the floor warming system fast and simple, whether the user is at home or on the road. The touchscreen on the thermostat features an intuitive and interactive color display screen that provides quick access to system settings and features. In addition to showing all relevant information about the current functions of the heating system, the display is also used to input programming information and make information requests with the simple touch of a fingertip.

Users can also access their thermostat settings via an app or website, so connecting to the system, on the fly, is easier than ever before.

Programming is also simplified with the thermostat’s set-up wizard which guides the user through the process. To help make better programming decisions, the system displays the local outdoor temperature and weather forecast.

The new thermostat provides added flexibility to accommodate any lifestyle by allowing homeowners to create up to six programming periods per day. By using the built-in adaptive function the thermostat learns, through its own experience, to turn the floor warming cables on and off with an appropriate time interval to reach the target temperature at each specified time of day.

A touch-driven energy consumption log can quickly display energy used by the system for three different time periods: hourly for the past 24 hours, daily for the past 7 days, or monthly for the past 12 months. Homeowners can use this data to optimize the settings so the floor warming system provides the comfort they want for the least energy use. Homeowners can also enter their current energy tariff (i.e., user’s current Kilowatt-hour rate) and the thermostat will calculate energy cost over the same time periods.

The new thermostat is available in spring of 2018 and is compatible with all DITRA-HEAT systems, so owners can upgrade their installed system with the Wi-Fi thermostat.

Sleek New Shower Grates Enhance Bathroom Design

Three Grate Designs in Two Styles of Drain Provide Plenty of Choice

4 inch Kerdi drain

A series of new shower drain grates from Schluter-Systems features brand new designs that fit into a virtually invisible frame, resulting in a stylish and truly seamless look for shower floors. Three new grate designs are available for both the standard 4” square point drains, and for Schluter’s linear drains in lengths from 20” to 48”.

The Schluter®-KERDI-DRAIN-STYLE grates (for point drain) and KERDI-LINE-STYLE grates (for linear drain) were developed through an in-depth project between European and North American designers, who came together to combine unique design trends from both sides of the globe into three fashionable shower grates. The design objective was to tie-in to today’s latest tile trends, while providing distinctly different looks that will fit in with various bathroom decors. The drain grates do not contain any screw holes, creating an uninterrupted design that adds to the seamless appearance.

The new “STYLE” grates are designed to integrate with the Schluter®-KERDI-DRAIN point drain and KERDI-LINE linear drain. Both types of drain feature an integrated bonding flange that provides a secure connection to the KERDI waterproofing membrane at the top of the assembly. This is an integral part of a sealed system that creates waterproof showers by protecting the substrate from water infiltration, hence preventing mold and mildew. Creating waterproof showers ensures their longevity, thus enhancing the sustainability aspects of these products.

The KERDI-LINE is a low profile linear drain that is ideal for barrier-free spaces and can be installed adjacent to walls or at intermediate locations in showers, wet rooms, and other applications that require waterproofing and drainage.

All of the new KERDI-DRAIN-STYLE and KERDI-LINE-STYLE grates and frames are made with brushed stainless steel. The interior of the grate assembly is smooth and free of protrusions for easy cleaning. These new designs will be available in spring of 2018.

Tub Surround Upgrades Made Easier

Schluter Provides Kit for Waterproofing Tub Surrounds

Schluter TubKit_Components

Installing tile in a tub surround can quickly transform an otherwise ordinary bathroom into a luxurious retreat. It is a simple upgrade that will pay dividends for the homeowner. The process of waterproofing the tub surround before tile installation has just been made easier with the Schluter-KERDI-TUBKIT. The result is a bathroom area that is hygienic and maintenance-free and has a luxurious look that can’t be matched by other materials.

The Schluter®-KERDI-TUBKIT for ceramic tile tub surrounds creates a completely waterproof environment and eliminates the possibility of damaging leaks and mold growth due to moisture penetration. The main component of the kit is a roll of Schluter®-KERDI, a sheet-applied waterproofing membrane made of pliable polyethylene that is covered on both sides with fleece webbing. The KERDI membrane is used to waterproof the walls before the tiles are installed.

The sheet membrane is applied to the walls, using thin-set mortar. A totally watertight system is created by simply overlapping the KERDI by at least 2 inches at all seams, or covering the seams with the strip of 5” Kerdi-Band included in the kit. Tiles are then set directly onto the KERDI with thin-set mortar. This system is not only waterproof, but vapor tight, so ceramic tile tub surrounds can be constructed using standard drywall. Installers and do-it-yourselfers no longer need to use cement board or other specialized tile backers, even in the most demanding situations.

The KERDI membrane sheet and strips in the kit are specifically sized for a standard tub surround, thereby reducing the amount of unused membrane at the end of the job.

The kit also includes a tube of KERDI-FIX sealing and bonding compound to create a waterproof seal around the tub flange. This is a particularly vulnerable area for moisture penetration so obtaining a proper waterproof seal where the tiles meet the tub is critical. Other components in the kit are a 4-1/2” mixing valve seal and a ¾” pipe seal to ensure that no moisture can enter the wall cavity where the plumbing fixtures protrude into the shower area.

Floor Warming System Provides Sound Control and Thermal Break

Schluter DITRA-HEAT-DUO

Like everyone else, condominium owners want warm floors and quiet spaces. Unfortunately, the concrete construction of these multi-story buildings makes controlling impact sound through floor-ceiling assemblies challenging, particularly with hard surface coverings like tiles. Sound control materials tend to be compressible and not all provide adequate support for the tile covering. DITRA-HEAT-DUO, formerly DITRA-HEAT-TB, reduces sound transmission, in addition to warming the floor and still supporting the covering to ensure a lasting installation.

ASTM E2179 testing shows DITRA-HEAT-DUO produces an increase in impact insulation class (ΔIIC) of 20 to a concrete slab floor. The dual benefits of reducing impact sound transmission and providing faster warm-up times make this membrane an ideal solution for ceramic and stone tile floor installations in multi-story residential construction.

Schluter-DITRA-HEAT-DUO is the first electric floor warming system with an integrated thermal break and sound control to overcome these multiple challenges. The relatively thin thermal break on the underside of the membrane allows the system to warm tiled floors up to 70% faster over concrete substrates by directing heat to the tile, not to the subfloor. The all-in-one system means faster and simpler installation as the membrane, heating cables, thermal break and sound control material are all combined in a single layer.

To achieve this assembly would normally require the installation of multiple layers. DITRA-HEAT-DUO is the only system that provides all of these benefits in a single layer. This new system has all of the same attributes as DITRA-HEAT, and the total assembly is only 5/16”-thick to minimize construction height.

Installers have the option of installing the heating cables, or not, depending on the specific needs of the situation. The heating cables are easily snapped into place on top of the uncoupling mat with no clips or fasteners. The installer has complete flexibility on where the cables are placed so every installation is customized to suit the exact requirements of the owner. Because they are held securely within the DITRA-HEAT-DUO mat, there is no need to use self-leveling compounds to encapsulate the heating cables. Instead of waiting for a leveling compound to set, tile installation can begin immediately, resulting in a much faster installation.

DITRA-HEAT-DUO performs the same four essential functions as the original DITRA uncoupling membrane for a lasting tile floor installation: uncoupling to prevent cracks in tiles and grout, waterproofing to protect areas beneath the tile from moisture, vapor management to provide a route for excess moisture to escape the substrate without damaging the tile, and support/load distribution to keep the tile covering intact with traffic.

Schluter-Systems Introduces Three Thin-Set Mortars

Formulated to be fully compatible with Schluter® products

Schluter Thinset Group

Schluter-Systems has developed three new thin-set mortars for ceramic and stone tile installation. The products are Schluter SET™ unmodified thin-set mortar, Schluter ALL-SET™ modified thin-set mortar, and Schluter FAST-SET™ rapid-setting modified thin-set mortar. These products have been specifically formulated for Schluter® membranes and boards. They will allow tile installers to use a single source for their tile installation systems, with guaranteed product compatibility.

The Schluter ALL-SET™ modified thin-set is engineered for use both under and over all DITRA® and KERDI® products. The Schluter FAST-SET™ rapid-setting modified thin-set is ready to grout in 4 hours for fast-track projects. All three products, including the Schluter SET™ are approved to set porcelain tile over Schluter® boards and membranes.

Schluter-Systems’ modified thin-set mortars have been specifically formulated to set and gain strength in a timeframe that fits typical installation practice, even when sandwiched between Schluter® membranes or boards and porcelain tile. The proportions of cement, water-retention agents, polymers, and other components in the mixtures were balanced to ensure that extended dry times are not required. This performance has been validated through both laboratory and practical testing. Now, the installer can select from either Schluter-Systems’ unmodified or modified thin-set mortar to install tiles over Schluter® products according to his or her preference.

The key to being able to use Schluter ALL-SET™ and Schluter FAST-SET™ thin-set mortars in these applications is predictability. By developing its own setting materials and controlling the formulas, Schluter-Systems now has the ability to guarantee consistently positive results. When using these thin-set mortars, installers can have complete confidence in setting times and strength gain in their installations.

When Schluter-Systems’ new thin-set mortars are used within certain Schluter® applications, an extended lifetime limited warranty is available.

Schluter-Systems will continue to warrant its systems when other manufacturers' unmodified thin-set mortars meeting ANSI A118.1 are used to install tile. The ongoing confidence in the performance of this product category is based on the known science of cement hydration and years of positive field experience.

New Waterproof Shower Components Reduce Installation Time

Schluter Eliminates Additional Waterproofing Steps

Schluter Keriboard Benches Curb

Tile showers must be thoroughly waterproofed to provide reliable performance. But properly waterproofing a shower area takes time and for professional tile installers, time is money. A series of new shower components from Schluter®-Systems speeds the process of completely waterproofing a shower area prior to tile installation.

All Schluter pre-formed shower benches and curbs are now constructed with waterproof and lightweight Kerdi-Board building panels, so additional waterproofing of these elements is no longer required. All seams are completely sealed so these load-bearing components can be quickly and easily installed using thin-set mortar, with a strip of waterproof membrane to be applied where the elements meet floors and walls. Kerdi-Board panels are dimensionally stable, making the material an ideal substrate for tile.

Schluter ShowerTray with KERDI

Schluter’s previous introduction of sloped polystyrene shower trays dramatically changed how tiled showers are built by eliminating the time-consuming construction of mud bed floors for many projects. Now, all Schluter shower trays will come with a pre-cut sheet of Kerdi membrane to waterproof the shower floor. The inclusion of this pre-cut sheet eliminates the need for the installer to measure and cut one or more pieces for the shower floor. It provides a perfect fit, every time, and there are no overlapping seams on the floor so installation is faster and easier.

Schluter is also launching two new sizes of shower trays so it is easier to select a tray to match the dimensions of the shower floor. Trays measuring 38” x 38” and 48” x 72” are now available, along with the existing sizes of 48” x 48”, 72” x 72”, and 32” x 60”.

All products are available immediately from tile dealers and home centers throughout North America.

Warm Tiled Floors Up to 70% Faster over Concrete Substrates

Integrated Thermal Break in Schluter-DITRA-HEAT-TB Provides Faster Installation

Ditra Heat Cutaway

The growth in floor warming systems for tiled floors has been dramatic; a steadily increasing number of homeowners want the comfort of a warmed floor underfoot. Unfortunately, systems installed over concrete can be slow to respond because of the mass of typically cool concrete immediately below the heating cables.

Schluter-DITRA-HEAT-TB is the first electric floor warming system with an integrated thermal break to overcome this challenge. The thin thermal break on the underside of the membrane allows the system to warm tiled floors up to 70% faster over concrete substrates, by directing heat to the tile, not to the subfloor. The all-in-one system means faster and simpler installation as the membrane, heating cables, and thermal break are all combined in a single layer.

To achieve this assembly would normally require the installation of three separate layers – a thermal break, a floor warming system and an uncoupling system. DITRA-HEAT is the only system that provides all three a single layer. This new system has all of the same attributes as DITRA-HEAT, and the total assembly is only 5/16”-thick to minimize construction height.

Ditra Heat Roll

The heating cables are easily snapped into place on top of the uncoupling mat with no clips or fasteners. The installer has complete flexibility on where the cables are placed so every installation is customized to suit the exact requirements of the owner. Because they are held securely within the DITRA-HEAT-TB mat, there is no need to use self-leveling compounds to encapsulate the heating cables. Instead of waiting for a leveling compound to set, tile installation can begin immediately, resulting in a much faster installation.

The system is compatible with all existing Schluter thermostats, including the new touchscreen thermostat. The matting is available in rolls and sheets, and heating cables are available for 120V and 240V circuits.

DITRA-HEAT-TB performs the same four essential functions as the original DITRA uncoupling membrane for a lasting tile floor installation: uncoupling to prevent cracks in tiles and grout, waterproofing to protect areas beneath the tile from moisture, vapor management to provide a route for excess moisture to escape the substrate without damaging the tile, and support/load distribution to keep the tile covering intact with traffic.

Now Twice the Options for the DITRA-HEAT Electric Floor Warming System

17 New Cable Length Options for DITRA-HEAT

Schluter®-Systems DITRA-HEAT new cable lengths

There are now double the number of cable lengths available for the Schluter-Systems DITRA-HEAT floor warming system. The DITRA-HEAT system is unique because the heating cables are easily snapped into place on top of the uncoupling mat with no clips or fasteners. The installer has complete flexibility on where the cables are placed so every installation is customized to suit the exact requirements of the owner.

The system launched just over one year ago with 17 different cable lengths to accommodate a wide range of project sizes. There are now 34 cable lengths to choose from: 17 for 120V circuits and 17 for 240V circuits. The additional cable lengths fill in gaps between the previous lengths so it is even easier to pick the right length of cable to suit the area to be warmed on any tiled floor.

The new lengths include cables that can be used in a space as small as 10.7 sq. ft. so the floor of a very small bathroom, powder room, or entryway can be easily warmed with the system.

DITRA-HEAT continues to perform the same four essential functions as the original DITRA uncoupling membrane for a lasting tile floor installation: uncoupling to prevent cracks in tiles and grout, waterproofing to protect areas beneath the tile from moisture, vapor management to provide a route for excess moisture to escape the substrate without damaging the tile, and support/load distribution to keep the tile covering intact with traffic. DITRA-HEAT is the only system that combines the uncoupling function to prevent tile cracking with the comfort of an electric floor warming system to bring a touch of luxury to any room in the home.

Faster, Thinner Floor Warming Installation

DITRA-HEAT Provides Floor Warming and Uncoupling in Single Layer

Schluter®-Systems DITRA-HEAT floor warming

Ceramic and stone tiles are ideal surface coverings because they are durable, easy to maintain, and hygienic. Floor warming systems have recently become very popular as a way to make tiled floors even more desirable, but none of the existing floor warming systems directly addresses concerns about potential cracks in tiles and grout. DITRA-HEAT is the first electric floor warming system that directly incorporates essential uncoupling technology into a floor warming system to provide heated floors that are not susceptible to cracking.

Schluter®-Systems DITRA-HEAT floor warming

With DITRA-HEAT, floors can now combine the beauty of a tile covering that won’t crack with the comfort of an electric floor warming system to bring a touch of luxury to any room in the home.

The frequent fluctuations in temperature caused by a floor warming system lead to more expansion and contraction of materials in the floor assembly. These frequent changes create greater movement stresses in the tile covering and increase the need for uncoupling. Existing installation methods require the installation of two separate systems – a floor warming system and an uncoupling system. DITRA-HEAT is the only system that provides floor warming and uncoupling in a single layer. The heating cables are easily snapped into place on top of the uncoupling mat with no clips or fasteners. The installer has complete flexibility on where the cables are placed so every installation is customized to suit the exact requirements of the owner.

Schluter®-Systems DITRA-HEAT floor warming thermostat

Because they are held securely within the DITRA-HEAT mat, there is no need to use self-leveling compounds to encapsulate the heating cables. Instead of waiting for a leveling compound to set, tile installation can begin immediately, resulting in a much faster installation.

The matting is available in rolls and sheets, and heating cables are available for 120V and 240V circuits. A digital thermostat controls the floor temperature and is offered in programmable and non-programmable formats. Both thermostats feature a built-in Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) and digital display with backlit screen. The programmable thermostat includes 250 preset programs.

Schluter®-Systems DITRA-HEAT floor warming cable

DITRA-HEAT performs the same four essential functions as the original DITRA uncoupling membrane for a lasting tile floor installation: uncoupling to prevent cracks in tiles and grout, waterproofing to protect areas beneath the tile from moisture, vapor management to provide a route for excess moisture to escape the substrate without damaging the tile, and support/load distribution to keep the tile covering intact with traffic.

DITRA-HEAT has been awarded the Best of 2014 Technology award at the 2014 Surfaces show for the flooring covering, stone and tile industry.

The KERDI-DRAIN grate assembly allows for lateral and tilt adjustment and accommodates a wide range of tile thicknesses. The covering support is placed flush with the top of the bonding flange and can therefore accommodate any thickness tile covering.

The tileable covering support is the newest addition to the available grate options for KERDI-DRAIN, including brushed nickel, brushed copper/bronze, brushed brass, oil-rubbed bronze, and stainless steel finishes. There are also stainless steel covers available for cleanout applications.

Prefabricated Shower Niche Improves Tile Installation

installation of shower niche

A shower niche is an ideal spot to keep shampoos and soaps in a tiled shower. But building a fully waterproof, properly sealed tiled shower niche can be a detailed and time consuming task. Schluter®-Systems has developed four prefabricated and completely waterproof shower niches that are ready to tile. Made of Schluter-KERDI-BOARD, the shower niches are completely compatible with surface applied waterproofing systems, such as the Schluter-KERDI and Schluter-KERDI-BOARD shower assemblies.

All four shower niches feature a 1/2 (12.5 mm)-thick by 2 (50 mm)-wide integrated bonding flange that sits perfectly flush with the surrounding wall area. The larger sizes include an optional prefabricated shelf that can be installed at any height to create separate compartments within the shower niche.

shower niches

The preformed shower niche provides installers with increased speed during installation, combined with complete waterproofing dependability. The corners of a traditional shower niche are the most challenging area to waterproof and can be very susceptible to standing water and mold growth. With pre-sealed niche corners this challenge is completely eliminated.

The niche complements an already wide array of preformed shower components available from Schluter-Systems, including shower trays, curbs, ramps, and benches. All of these components help installers build waterproof and vapor tight tiled showers more quickly and effectively than with traditional construction materials.

The shower niche is available in four different sizes: 12 x 6 (305 mm x 152 mm), 12 x 12 (305 mm x 305 mm), 12 x 20 (305 mm x 508 mm), and 12 x 28 (305 mm x 711 mm).

Faster, Better Quality Tile Installations, from Schluter®-Systems

Kerdi-Board Reduces Home Disruption During Tiling Projects

For a host of reasons, many surfaces in new homes and renovation projects are not immediately suitable for tile installation. These installations can require a lot of additional work and waterproofing measures before tiles can be installed. Surfaces can be uneven and are often not entirely plumb, level and square. Also, most building materials are not waterproof so they are not suitable for use in wet areas without additional waterproofing. This extra work can make a project take longer and cause additional disruption and mess in the home. On the other hand, if short-cuts are taken the result can be a poor quality installation.

A new universal substrate for tiles has been developed by Schluter-Systems. A substrate is any surface that serves as a foundation for another layer – in this case a surface that is going to have ceramic or stone tile set on it. The innovative and unique Schluter®-KERDI-BOARD system provides a reliable alternative method for creating tile installations. This lightweight board system gives homeowners and the builders, remodelers, and tile installers they hire more control over their tiling projects. They can now more quickly and easily create ideal substrates for tile anywhere in the home.

Schluter-KERDI-BOARD creates an absolutely flat substrate with straight and precisely aligned inside and outside corners that is immediately ready for tile, without additional preparation.

The board system can be installed on virtually any wall surface to quickly and easily prepare it for tile installation. It can be used over masonry, concrete, or walls already finished with plaster, tiles, paint, etc. KERDI-BOARD is attached to wood or metal studs using screws with washers. KERDI-BOARD can also be used as a building element to construct free-standing structures that are ready to be tiled.

Kerdi-Board shower construction

Some of the many applications of the Schluter-KERDI-BOARD system include the following:

Kerdi-Board bathtub platform

Tiled showers, steam showers, and bathtub surrounds. Schluter-KERDI-BOARD is waterproof and vapor-retardant and is suitable for use in bonded waterproofing assemblies such as tiled showers and bathtub surrounds. This assembly can replace the current method of installing tile backerboard and then applying a complete waterproofing system over the entire shower area to prepare for tiling.

Bathtub platforms are excellent opportunities for tile coverings. Many of the materials traditionally used to build platforms are moisture-sensitive and require additional preparation prior to setting tile. Schluter®-KERDI-BOARD can be used to quickly and simply create even and waterproof substrates that are immediately ready for tiling.
