Drywall

Cracking

Problem: Other types of drywall cracking.

Cause: Corner bead pulling away from framing.

Differential shrinkage, especially at beams or headers can cause cracking along the corner-bead edge as shown in Figure 61.

Solutions:

  • Nail corner bead at 4 inches (100 mm) rather than at the usually recommended 6 inches (150 mm). Crimping alone is not sufficient.
  • Don't extend corner bead to the subfloor. Leave a 1/2 inch (13 mm) gap.
  • Avoid flattening the corner bead when fastening. Ensure a sufficiently high bead for adequate cover with finishing compound.
  • In highly visible areas, such as the opening between living and dining rooms, some builders omit corner bead and install a wood trim or molding.
