Making The Most Out Of A Small Kitchen - Part 2

Part 1

Sink Base Cabinets:

The area under the sink is usually wasted space.

There are numerous organizers which can make valuable use of the space under the sink, as shown in Figures 10 and 11.

Cabinet Doors:

On lower cabinet doors add space saving racks to hold items. Most upper cabinet doors do not allow for organizer racks because of the position of the shelving.

The use of a cabinet door knife holder such as the Knifaway (Figure 12) can eliminate the need for a knife block on a counter top, freeing up valuable space. As well, cabinet doors can provide a convenient location for storage of lighter items, as shown in Figure 13.

Base Cabinets: Consider the use of roll out drawers for the bottoms of lower cabinets. Roll out drawers, Figures 14 and 15, allow you to get the most of the useable space in the depth of the lower base cabinets.

  • Appliances:

Microwave ovens take up a considerable amount of countertop space.

Consider replacing the vent hood over the range with a combination over the range microwave oven, vent hood appliance as shown in Figure 16 and 17.

Small appliances: Many small appliances now come as space saver models as shown in Figures 18, 19 and 20. These appliances are made to mount under upper wall cabinets - freeing up valuable counter space.
