How To Choose Nails & Screws - Part 3

Table 4 provides a listing of the different types of nails that are available along with the features of each.

Type Usage & Features Appearance

Box

  • Thin profile
  • Available as bright smooth, coated smooth, bright ring and ardox
  • Blunt tip
  • 1/2 to 2.5 inches in length
  • Used for fastening very thin wood
  • Available in copper, aluminum, steel and stainless steel

Brad

  • Small common nail up to 1"
  • Used to fasten small light weight trim
  • Often come in decorator colors to match paneling

Casing

  • Thicker than finishing nail
  • Available for outdoor use as galvanized
  • Stronger than finishing nail
  • Used to fasten case trims and moldings where a small head is required
  • Sizes - 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 inches

Common

  • Available as bright smooth, coated smooth, bright ring, bright spiral, bright ardox and coated ring
  • Available for outdoor use as galvanized
  • Large head
  • Used as primary nail for general construction, carpentry, framing
  • Sizes - 1 1/4 to 4 inches

Common - Coated

  • Common nail that is coated
  • less effort needed to drive nail
  • more holding power than common nail

Concrete

Cooler

  • Vinyl coated
  • Easy to drive
  • Excellent griping.
  • Sizes - 1 1/4 to 3 1/4 inches

Cut Flooring

  • Used to fasten hardwood boards or planks to wood sub-floor
  • Tempered hardened steel
  • Sizes - 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 inches

Deck

  • Used for outdoor decking and general outdoor construction
  • Available galvanized in spiral and ring shank
  • Sizes - 2 to 6 inches

Drywall

  • Used to attach drywall to wood studs joists or beams
  • Cupped (bugle head) shaped head allows for easy countersinking into drywall paper surface without tears
  • Available with smooth, barbed or ringing shank
  • Available with cement coating, blued and galvanized
  • Sizes - 1 to 2 1/2 inches

Duplex

  • Has double head which makes it easy for removal
  • Application is general for temporary nailing such as forms
  • Sizes - 1 3/4 to 3 1/2 inches

  • Specifically manufactured for outdoor use on wooden fences
  • Electro-galvanized with a ringed shank
  • Size 1 3/4 inches

  • Available galvanized for outdoor use
  • Used to hang wire fence or barbed wire to wood poles
  • Sizes - 1 to 2 1/2 inches

  • Designed for trim and other delicate work
