Noise Control - Walls, Floors and Ceilings

Index For Sound Proofing & Noise Control

Problem: Insufficient sound proofing and noise reduction, even through the wood-stud wall contains sound-absorbing material.

Cause: Unknown design or construction error. Existing wall cannot be disturbed.

Solutions:

  • Install an independent row of studs. Put sound-absorbing material in the new cavity and attach two layers of drywall to the new studs as shown in Figure 2a. The farther the additional layers of drywall are from the existing wall the better the reduction of low-frequency noise; a thing air space can transmit a lot of vibration from layer to layer.

  • Attach strapping to the existing wall, using a combination of wood strapping and resilient metal furring, or steel studs only. Put sound-absorbing material in the cavity and attach two layers of drywall to the new assembly as shown in Figure 2b.
