Installing A Ceiling Medallion

Question: I want to add a ceiling medallion to the light fixture that I have in my dining room. Will the screws that hold the light fixture in place also hold the medallion in position?

Answer: Most of the ceilign medallions or rosettes currently made for mounting above ceiling light fixtures are made of molded polyurethane, which makes them extremely light weight.

Although the screws that hold the light fixture in place would most likely support the added weight of the light fixture medallion or rosette, they will not hold the outside edges of the medallion or rosette tight against the ceiling and over time, the outside edge of the medallion or rosette will sag away from the ceiling.

The best method to install the medallion or rosette is to use an adhesive caulk or construction adhesive applied with a caulking gun. The information supplied with the medallion or rosette should advise on the best adhesive for that specific medallion. Apply the adhesive, keeping it about an inch away from the edges of the medallion or rosette and use a twisting motion on the medallion or rosette to ensure that the medallion or rosette is tight against the ceiling.

It may be necessary to add a couple of screws through the medallion or rosette to hold it in place until the adhesive cures. The holes can be filled and painted after the adhesive is dry.

As many ceilings are not flat it may be necessary to run a small bead of caulk around the outside edge of the medallion or rosette to hide any gaps that may appear between the medallion or rosette and the ceiling.

Note: The screws that are currently holding the light fixture to the electrical box will probably not be long enough once the medallion or rosette is in place.
